William Lane Craig on The argument from design

Argues forPhilosopher and Christian theologian

Craig argues that biological complexity and cosmic order point to an intelligent designer, complementing his other arguments.

Craig distinguishes between biological design (which he treats cautiously, acknowledging evolution) and cosmic design (which he treats as powerful evidence for God). He rarely endorses young-earth creationism or intelligent design biology, preferring to ground his design argument in physics rather than biology.

His version of the design argument focuses on the initial conditions of the universe — not just the fine-tuning of constants but the extraordinarily low entropy of the Big Bang, which Roger Penrose calculated to be one part in 10^(10^123). This initial configuration, Craig argues, cries out for explanation, and design provides the best one.

Craig sees the design argument as complementing the Kalam: the Kalam establishes that the universe has a cause, and the fine-tuning argument establishes that this cause is intelligent. Together, they make a powerful cumulative case for a personal creator.

The extraordinary fine-tuning of the laws and constants of nature, their beauty, their discoverability, their elegance — all of this points powerfully to a transcendent intelligence behind the cosmos.
